Surprising Discovery: Alligator Found Living in Ohio Homes Basement

A fully grown, 5-foot-long American alligator has been found in a home in Ohio, 25 years after it was purchased by the family.

Last week, police received an unusual tip from a woman in Madison Township, leading them to her basement. Upon arrival, they made the surprising discovery of the large alligator.

“I’ve never seen anything like that in my 17 years in the department,” said Madison Township Police Commander Darrell Breneman when speaking to CNN.

The homeowner revealed that her son had purchased the alligator at a reptile flea market 25 years ago and had kept it in the basement ever since, according to the police.

The gator, found to be in good condition, was voluntarily surrendered by the family, and subsequently removed from the home by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

Wildlife officials are planning to transport the alligator to an animal sanctuary in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where it will live out its retirement in warmer weather.

Ohio has banned the possession of alligators, among other wild animals, as outlined in the Senate Bill 310.
